Farm to fork, food that’s good for you, your local community and the planet.
From 2025, if you live in the Isle of Wedmore or Cheddar areas we will be offering a trial veg box scheme for 35 members using the Community Supported Agriculture model (CSA). This will be a partnership between the consumer and the community grower. Members are invited to sign up at the beginning of each season, purchasing an upfront subscription on a monthly or annual basis in return for a veg box each week from June to December. Working in this way shares the risk and reward, supporting your local grower, the environment all whilst receiving fresh and nutritionally rich food to nourish body and mind.
In addition, the profits for the veg box scheme will go back into the organisation supporting the work we do with food banks, and schools in the Mendips where families are suffering from high levels of food insecurity.
Why local, nature-friendly food systems are important
-
For the planet.
The agro-ecological food system places nature at the heart of food production, making sure we are enhancing rather than exploit biodiversity. At Wedmore Village Farm we are creating habitats for nature to thrive as well as growing diverse crops and pollinator plants to provide a rich ecosystem for soil organism, insects and birds to thrive. Creating a short, local supply chain, means that becoming a member will improve the ecological footprint of your veg.
-
For the consumer.
Supermarkets focus on uniformity, size and transportability rather than prioritising flavour or nutritional value. These crieria requires artificial fertilises and pesticides which are harmful to wildlife, farmer and consumer, with residues remaining on crops. We are chemical-free and flavour foucesed, meaning your veg won’t turn up with any nasties on them and you will receive diverse seasonal crops with a nutritional complexity reflective of our diverse growing system.
-
For the farmer.
The reduction in food prices over the last 50 years has made it increasingly difficult for farmers to earn enough money to survive, with small-scale farmers suffering the most from a globalised food system and the emergence of supermarkets. Selling directly to members allows the farmer to receive a fair price for the food they grow and to farm use organic methods that won’t compromise their health.
CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture and describes a partnership between the farm and consumer where members agree to support the grower for the season to secure a local, fresh and nature-friendly veg supply. By signing up for a share of the harvest, members accept the risk of a smaller share if factors such as weather lead to crop failures. Community engagement is key to the model and we want members to feel connected with the food they are eating, weekly volunteer sessions as well as events will provide members with the chance to visit the farm and contribute towards the project.
How the CSA model works

What to expect in the bag
Your veg bag will be delivered on a Tuesday or Thursday with a variety freshly harvested produce from the field. The produce will be seasonal, meaning its contents will change throughout the year. In the early season you can expect spring greens, radishes, peas and baby carrots, throughout the summer we will have a bounty of courgettes, salad, cucumbers and tomatoes, moving into autumn and winter, it will be squashes, root crops, cabbages and kales that can survive the colder temperatures. An ‘item’ of veg might be a bag of salad, a bunch of beetroot, a cabbage or a punnet of tomatoes.
